Okay, I hope this is much better then my last tutorial. I tried to keep as many files as I could so if I wanted to make one I could. I was not going to make one on this painting because I am not sure if I like it or if I am 100% done yet.

Oh well. I have the files and I really don't have the room on my computer to keep them all so I need to make it or never do it. *^_^* I have been working on this and trying really hard to think of ways to explain it the best I can. I hope this can help some. I am new to the whole tablet thing and even more new to the tutorial thing :giggle:

A really great tut on your technique. Thank you for sharing it with us.

One small complaint, scrolling sideways is a pain in the rear, a down scroller is more user friendly. But thats just a personal preference for me.

Thanks again have a great day!

Very good tutorial. I am new with my tablet and most I like the sentence:" Don't feel you are cheating if you use a reference..." that was my problem...I felt so...thank you very much for your meaning about it, helps me a lot and it gives me a good feeling.

Thank you so much, your words reassure me. How long did you work in digital paintings? And what do you think about graphire 3 tablets?^^ I know, some questions, but...I wanna know all I can get. I am starter, beginner, but I love to use tablets. Do wanna make some beginner-tuts in future? Please? :flirty:

And one more compliment...you are a very friendly person.

I just started digital painting...this is my 4th painting. A good friend, Scott send me his Graphire4 A6 (CTE-440)

Other then that I know nothing about tables. This is my first tablet. I am a beginner myself ^_^. I started after Christmas.

Here are the paintings I have done:

1st:[link]
2nd:[link]
3rd:[link]
4th:[link]

I will try to make a beginner tutorial but what are you looking for? Like how to use a table, how to color, shade, draw..ect

If you can find an example of a tutorial that you want to see more in depth send it to me and I will see what I can do for you sweetie.

you just started.... Ö___Ö ...but...how...omg....This is really exciting. Ok. But you painted before on papers, did u? And with mouse...?

What I#m looking for..I guess I need some tipps in the basics, yes. A walk through. I don't know if I do right. I draw the outlines first and put them in a own layer, then I try to color, shade and draw in second, third, fourth....layers I#have so much layers without a clear vision. Ind I also need to know, in what sizes you work, what a resolution.

ah..look please:

[link]

An unfinished piece of my "art"work with a graphire A5 (my third Baby after my doughter and my husband^^)

How do you shade or set lights? With burn- and dodgetools? Do you use the smudgetool? I like it, but it takes the colour away, doesn't it?

Ok, I'll stop here with my questions. Thats enough now.. :blushes:

And a big sorry for my english, it's my second language...

Have a nice day ! :sun:

Yeah...I just started. I was push to get really good because it was a gift and I also had someone I was in love with that I wanted to show I could do it too. Long story. Before all I had was a mouse to color my artwork.
I just looked at your link...omg that candle is AMAZING!!! It looks so real!!! It is perfect. You will have not problems learning at all sweetie. *^_^* I will be more then happy to help you as much as I can.

I work really big. I ALWAYS work 300 resolution. The size of the image is always different for me. It it up to what I am painting and I can always make it bigger or smaller with the crop tool if I need more areas to paint.

when I am painting, I never use any other tools like burn or smudge. I just use the brush. In Photoshop, to blend the colors I have to change the opacity lower and lower and use the eyedropper tool to pick up the colors that they make in the middle. I only use the smudge tool to push and pull areas of my painting. Like if I think one eye is a little to low I move it up very careful or if the nose is sticking out to much I will shape it better. This is best to do when it is done in the first stages when you are just blocking in colors or even just drawing in the line work. I am sure many people can use the smudge tool to blend in colors but I just don;t think it feels natural.

I also try hard to say away from using pure blacks or pure white in painting. They can make the painting look flat. If you just use a little tiny bit of blue in the black it will make a big difference. That all depends on what you are painting and what the main color it is on.

I will see what I can do. Would you like me do a face painting of skin tones or something? I will try really hard to show more. I paint very, very simple. Just a few brushes, eyedropper tool, and the biggest thing that really will help you is to have something to look at.

If you are just starting you really should look for some hands to look at. Really it is not cheating. You will learn so much from it. The more you use something to look at...soon you have to have that pose of hands to look at. You will remember the colors and the ways they look. ^_^ Really...it helps so much. Just look what happen with my art. I know you can do it...just look what you are doing without it...I would love to see what you can do if you search here on DA and find some hands that you like! Man...you will love yourself for it!

Hello dear and first thanks for the friendlist.

Yes, a face painting would be nice. Please show me/us how do you use a reference picture. Do you print it before and take it beside you? Do you use it as a own layer? Or as an own opened picture? Stupid questions, I know, but I didn't use a reference picture before. ö.ö I don't know to work with, I'm just a noobie^^

And what sort of brushes do you use?

Thank you for ur compliment for my candle. :)
And yes...I have a lot of candles in my home.

And thank you for all what you do for me, for your help and good words, that makes me very hopeful.

Best greetings and all the best for you ,

You are very welcome ^_-

Well, when I find a stock photo I like, I make sure it is okay to use it. I save it in a file that I will delete later. I open up Photoshop and open a new image that is for my painting. I have a background layer and then I make a new layer and name it "Lines".
Then I open of the reference picture and have it to the side of the other image. They are both zoomed out side by side and I draw it very roughly. Just getting the shapes and spaces I need. It works best if I keep both my image and the photo at the same zoom % and the same area as I start to work more close.

I would do the same if I was drawing/painting not on the computer. If I was doing a watercolor I would have the images side by side.

The computer works great because there is a great tip: If you are not sure if things are right, rotate the your image upside down or to the right or left. Look at it for new ways and even take a few breaks from time to time so you can see it with "new" eyes. You can see mistakes that you could not before.

As for brushes, I use a few but I have played around with a lot of peoples too. These are some great ones that can really help you I am sure:
[link]

I use the two round brushes and just make them harder or softer and change the opacity. I start at 100% opacity when blocking in the colors then go to 50% to start blending them and 30% for the final touching ups. I never really go under 30%..sometimes you get funny lines that start happening as you try to blend. When I lower the opacity I also lower the hardness of the brush but only by a little. I don't want it to look to airbrushed. It is nice to see some areas that look painted still and see the movement of the strokes. ^_^
